Believe it or not, this is perfectly normal from the perspective of the business world. No need to delay, get the new guy in now so he can get moving.
I am under the assumption that President Trump is irritated with General Mattis, not the fallout of his resignation. If Mattis disagrees with the President as much the letter implies and is so dismissive of what the President has accomplished on every point Mattis brought up, he never should have accepted the position.
Mattis tendered his resignation on Thursday after Trump decided to pull troops out of Syria. In a letter to Trump, Mattis subtly criticized Trump over the decision, as well as his treatment of U.S. allies.
“My views on treating allies with respect and also being clear-eyed about both malign actors and strategic competitors are strongly held and informed by over four decades of immersion in these issues,” Mattis wrote.
“Because you have the right to have a Secretary of Defense whose views are better aligned with yours on these and other subjects, I believe it is right for me to step down from my position,” he continued.
Mattis was initially scheduled to leave office on Feb. 28, 2019, but Trump has reportedly fumed over the Pentagon chief’s resignation statement.

The President badly needs someone he respects who are fully informed about the Deep State infestation disaster to vet prospective cabinet members thoroughly. If he had one two years ago, we’d have been spared a whole lot of trouble.
It’s been said, the only difference between civilian and military obedience to direction by one’s seniors, is that in the civilian life, you get fired, and in the military, you go to jail.
In senior leadership positions, the junior obeys the senior position. It isn’t a time to argue, and debate as to who is better, nor is it a time to agree to disagree.
You either support your chain of command, or you are the problem. I support Trump and reinforce his position.
