President Donald Trump is planning to cut over $4 billion in aid to over 100 foreign nations during the next fiscal year. This is a move many of his supporters will be happy over, given that the United States is expected to run a $1 trillion deficit in 2019.
Not surprisingly, however, Trump is getting pushback from congress–especially Democrats–regarding his recent announcement.
According to CBN News chief political analyst David Brody, a senior official with the administration said the move is part of a “recessions package” that has the goal of cancelling billions of foreign aid. Instead, the money will be spent at the discretion of the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.
The cuts will be formally submitted to Congress this week, according to a report in Roll Call.
Not surprisingly, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opposes the move. She wrote a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in which she complained that withholding the foreign aid “overrides Congress’ most fundamental constitutional power” and “violates the good faith” of congressional budgeting.
Republican Lindsey Graham, normally a supporter of President Trump, has also come out against the plan. Graham and Rep. Hal Rogers of Kentucky argued the cuts would undermine “significant” national security interests–but did not specify how they would do so. The pair added that the cuts would “complicate the ability of the Administration and Congress to work constructively on future appropriations deals.”
Some of the cuts are from programs Democrats typically champion, such as green energy and abortion. For example, the cuts would get rid of “voluntary family planning” in the African countries Sierra Leone, Niger, Burkina Faso and Benin.
CBN’s Brody said a senior official told him: “The president himself has stated that there is a lot of fat in the foreign assistance we provide. While there are many great programs we support around the world, taxpayer dollars should not be spent on ‘voluntary family planning’ in Africa — which could include abortion. This administration is committed to cutting wasteful spending and protecting the unborn.”
The cuts also target “Guatemalan agriculture technology, solar panels in Central Asia, crop diversity in Bangladesh, desert survival courses in Egypt and cuts to border security funds provided to more than a dozen countries including El Salvador,” according to CBN.
Many are finding irony in the fact that Democrats are wailing over cuts to El Salvador’s border security–while refusing to fund border security for our own nation.
