On Thursday, Amy Ellissa Hammer of Seagrove, North Carolina, was arrested after local officials found she committed fraud in an attempt to save her marriage.
It wasn’t some little fraud, or this wouldn’t be headlines. She claimed to have cancer, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, which grows in the bone marrow. She created a Facebook page to accept donations for health costs, told T-shirts and scheduled a large fundraiser, which was canceled after her arrest.
Amy claimed her husband was going to leave her and she couldn’t stomach the separation, so she concocted this elaborate story. The Police are working to find out how much money Amy scammed off of caring individuals.
“I do not have cancer,” Hammer told Fox 8, explaining that she lied to keep her marriage intact. “When he said he was going to leave me, it was an impulsive thing. We’ve been together so long, I was scared, terrified. That’s my three kids, my husband that I’ve known for so long. So it was an impulsive thing and it snowballed.”
“I have to deal with what I’ve done and that I hate myself,” Hammer said. “But I am sorry, I have to live with this. What I have done has hurt a lot of people, a lot.”
The mom promised to return the donations, saying, “Assumptions are like rumors, they just keep spreading and spreading, and I have three kids. What I’ve done to my children is awful and I have to live with that. I am trying to shelter my kids right now.”
Hammer was charged with Obtaining Property by False Pretense and jailed on a $2,000 bond. She is due in Randolph County Superior Court on Apr. 22. “No matter what I say, it’s not an excuse and it’s not going to make it right, but I have to live with this,” Hammer told Fox 8. “I have to live with a lot of things because a lot of things are going to change.” [Yahoo Lifestyle]
Two major issues with this story. First, she lied to her husband, which is probably one of the problems he already had with her that complicated their marriage in the first place, but a completely separate and different issue rose when she accepted money for false reasons. That is a much worse issue and affected many more people than her and her husband.
She didn’t have to solicit donations if all she did was want to make her husband feel sorry for her and stay, she is spinning fast to save face — greed, pure and simple.
If she is the kind of person, who would fake cancer to keep her husband from leaving, imagine the type of wife she is. The words jealous and possessive come to mind.
Why do people donate to any of these things? It is illegal for any medical facility to deny life-saving treatment so if she did have cancer they would have to treat it and sort the bills out later.
I understand there are just some people who do desperate things in desperate times. However, deliberately defrauding those who believed she was ill and were coming to her aid because her story touched their hearts is going to be a very bitter pill she will keep on swallowing for a long time to come.
There are so many blessed, big-hearted people in this world that whenever there are those who reach out for assistance, there will always be those willing, able and eager to help.
