Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) spoke at CPAC on Thursday, saying that liberals don’t understand that disadvantaged students would rather have parents who care for them than a free lunch at school. He said Republicans offer their constituents “ideas” while Democrats offer a “full stomach and an empty soul.”
Ryan told a story about a young boy who got a government-provided free lunch at school every day. The boy said he “didn’t want a free lunch. He wanted his own lunch. One in a brown paper bag, just like the other kids,” because “he knew a kid with a brown paper bag had someone who cared for him.”
Ryan connecting the story with CBO projections that say some people will voluntarily leave the work-force due to Obamacare. “People don’t just want a life of comfort. They want a life of dignity, a life of self-determination.”
The left was eager to twist Ryan’s words into headlines like “Paul Ryan at CPAC: Free school lunches mean poor parents don’t care about kids” *Sigh* They just don’t get it.
