Mick Mulvaney, White House Chief of Staff, is going to have a long week after he inadvertently contradicted President Trump’s argument against releasing his tax returns.
Trump has used the claim his tax returns are under audit and can’t be released. Mulvaney, while on Fox News Sunday said the opposite. An audit does not preclude a president, or anyone else, from issuing that information. Mulvaney did add that he was sure that Trump’s legal position would be enough to stop Democrats from obtaining the taxes.
If President Trump was watching or if he heard it from a 3rd source, which usually ends in lost translation, he’s not going to be happy. So that things are not taken out of context, the video is below.
“To be clear, you believe Democrats will never see the president’s tax returns,” Hemmer said.
“Never,” Mulvaney answered, adding “nor should they. Keep in mind, that was an issue that was already litigated during the election. Voters know the president could have given his tax returns, they knew that he didn’t, and they elected him anyway, which is of course what drives the Democrats crazy.”
“The president argues that he’s under audit, has said that for a couple years, but even under audit, legally, you could allow people to see it,” Hemmer pointed out.
“You could always allow people to see it,” Mulvaney agreed, contradicting Trump’s explanation.
