A Trump supporter who was brutally beaten because he wore a MAGA hat, is now turning to the courts to get the justice he deserves.
Jahangir Turan took photos of his injuries after the attack, where he said he was jumped by a belligerent and dangerous group back in July, when he was leaving his art studio in New York City.
According to the lawsuit, a group of about 15 to 18 people who were patrons at the “ABC Angels Club pop-up” event began insulting him for wearing the hat. The suit goes on to say that one person knocked the hat off his head, while two others smashed his head and face into nearby metal scaffolding.
The defendants in the lawsuit include photographer and fashionista Anna Bloda, an event organizer, building owners United American Land and Wallplay, a gallery that hosted the event. The suit cites “gross negligence” by all named parties. Turan has also listed the unknown attackers, as John and Jane Does in the suit. Turan says he’s hoping to learn their identities as part of discovery during trial.
I’d imagine that there is video evidence of the attack. The police were never able to make any arrests.
Officials said 42-year-old Jahangir Turan told police he was on Canal Street in SoHo around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when was struck in the head from behind. He refused medical attention.
Turan said he was leaving the N train wearing a MAGA hat when a group of teenagers yelled “F*** Trump” and attacked him.
He spoke at a press conference Thursday, detailing his recollection of the attack. He said about 15 to 18 people were involved.
“One girl flipped my hat, and within five to eight seconds, I got pushed from the back of my face, and my face hit the scaffolding pole. I got startled, I walked away,” he said.
Turan, whose face was swollen and bruised at the press conference, said he’s surprised police have not made arrests.
“It’s kind of ridiculous to get beat up like this for wearing a hat,” he said.
He said he bought the hat that day at Trump Tower and had plans to put it in his home because he believes “it’s dangerous to wear a hat like this in New York City.”
The attack has not stopped him from putting the hat on and expressing his political views.
“I love President Trump, I think he’s doing a great job,” said Turan. [ABC 7]

The New York Post reports that the “ABC Angels Club” event was a “carefully curated” skateboard-inspired showcase for various hip labels, including Bloda’s own “Bloda’s Choice,” the papers say. It is not clear why other artists selling at the event are not being sued. The lawsuit insists that “these ‘pop-up’ stores pose a danger to their neighborhoods” because there is “little to no oversight” while they “attract unruly attendees and often involve illegally served alcohol.”
