Kareem Abdul Jabbar, I didn’t know you are old enough to know what songs slaves sang. By the way, most slave owners were Democrats.
As long as you choose always to blame the past you will never succeed in the present – slavery is the only part of history that those who want to continue slavery preserve. I might get called a sellout because I said that but that doesn’t make that statement false.
You can live in the past but your future will never be as great as it can unless you choose to make the necessary corrections to the mistakes you are promoting and praising.
I have heard the original song was something that was racist. What happened to those verses, I don’t know. Maybe America saw the same thing and decided they were bad and removed them intentionally. Either way, what is sung these days has nothing to do with slavery.

Abdul-Jabbar, 71, in a Tuesday column for The Hollywood Reporter, recanted what Frederick Douglass said in “My Bondage and My Freedom.”
“Slaves are generally expected to sing as well as to work.” Abdul-Jabbar wrote, adding slaves had to sing their “oppressor’s feel-good songs” as well.
He wrote that the “Star-Spangled Banner” is the song that President Trump – the oppressor – is demanding to be sung.
“Currently, the song being demanded is the national anthem during football games. But during a warm-up game on Aug. 10, despite President Trump’s previous condemnation, several Eagles players kneeled during the anthem or raised their fists — their way of singing their own song,” he wrote.
“For them, lyrics like ‘land of the free’ don’t accurately represent the daily reality for people of color. They love their country but want that country to recognize the suffering that occurs when it isn’t living up to its constitutional promises.”
You can’t compare the professional players to slaves. They make millions; slaves made nothing. If they don’t want to be on a team, they can leave. For slaves to leave, they were hunted down and most of the time, lynched, burned or both.
Singing the national anthem is honoring our country, our men, and women who have died protecting it. I have a son who fought for this country. If you kneel or support those that kneel I am highly offended If they want to protest, do it on their own time with their own money.
