Vice President Mike Pence tried, Sen. Mike Lee tried, and it seems some Republicans aren’t willing to give President Trump a pass on this national emergency declaration.
The result will be that President Trump will veto the bill and things will continue as usual. Lawsuits will be filed, and sooner or later this declaration will run its course to the Supreme Court.
What many will be surprised to learn is Republicans proposed they would side with the President if he signed an agreement to curb the number of future national emergencies. How in the heck can that be done? How can you even offer that with a serious face?
Senate Republicans say talks to find a way to stop a House-passed resolution disapproving of President Trump’s emergency declaration over the southern border are collapsing amid Republican divisions over what some see as a breach of separation of powers.
Senate Republicans said Wednesday afternoon that Trump will not support a proposal sponsored by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) to reform the National Emergencies Act of 1976 and require Congress to approve future emergency declarations after 30 days.
“It’s my understanding the president won’t support it,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), a member of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) leadership team, after meeting with colleagues at lunch to discuss the state of the talks.
Lee announced Trump’s position after taking a call from the president during the lunch meeting, according to a person familiar with the conversation. [excerpt via The Hill]
Trump has gone to bat for the American people time after time, and the Republicans in the Congress have been AWOL time after time. They got their butts handed to them in the House elections because of that, and it will be even worse in 2020 if they don’t stop betraying their constituents.
Here’s the bottom line. These Republicans don’t oppose border security, or at least some of them do not. They oppose unilateral action by POTUS that sets a terrible precedent for future presidents to move monies around by declaring a National Emergency.
President Trump felt like that was his only recourse after he tried to work with Democrats and Republicans to protect the American people.
Trump wants his wall built by any means necessary and Trump supporters are with him every step of the way. A Democratic President will do the same, and that’s where things will be, and everyone will need to get over it. If Dems choose to do something ridiculous with guns, destroy the economy or create some action with climate change, you can bet they are chomping at the bit to do something they never thought they would get away with.
I hope the wall gets built so at least we would have gotten something out of it.
