Maine GOP Mayor Resigns — Calls Elderly Black People ‘Antique Farm Equipment’

I get it. Some people make racist jokes and think it’s ok because they are trying to be comedians.

Comedians get away with that type of lifestyle and get paid for it, and while that doesn’t make it right, that’s what they do. In regards to politicians, they are held at a higher standard or should be. Their lives are on public display, and they signed up for the responsibility so they should have to adhere to the standard.

Lewiston, Maine, the second largest city has a problem with their Republican Mayor, Shane Bouchard who just stepped down after a former lover leaked his texts and emails showing how he made jokes about elderly black people. According to The Sun Journal reports, he called them “antique farm equipment.”

Heather Everly Berube is responsible for releasing Bouchard’s private messages. She allegedly had an affair with him during his election campaign.

The text exchange between the two happened in late 2017, months before the Maine Examiner published internal emails from Ben Chin, Bouchard’s opponent, who said he’d encountered a “bunch of racists” while campaigning.

“All my jokes are quite racist lol,” he reportedly said in a text, later adding: “What do you call 2 old black people sitting on your front lawn.”

“Antique farm equipment,” he said.

“Yikes,” Berube wrote back.

The exchange involving the racist joke also reportedly came roughly two months before internal emails from Bouchard’s opponent in the past election, Ben Chin, were made public.

In one of those emails, Chin said he had encountered “a bunch of racists” while campaigning. Chin’s comments were reportedly considered divisive by some and partly cost him the race, according to the local paper. [excerpt via The Hill]

Spend any amount of time observing people, and it becomes clear that words/actions and intent are hardly ever indicative of one another. How does one work out what’s in another’s ‘heart’ when there’s no reliable way to do so?

Racism is indeed stupid. Very, very stupid that someone would allow such a thing to treat other people as less than human. But what’s stupid is instead of addressing your stupidity and trying to do better, you hand-wave it away and make no moves to fix it -before- someone alerts the world and it blows up in your face.
