What will America find out if those emails are released?
The National Republican Congressional Committee claims that it had employed a full-time cybersecurity employee, but it seems that did not stop a hacker from surveilling for senior top aides email accounts for months.
Pres. Trump told CBS back in July; “The DNC should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be hacked. They had bad defenses, and they were able to be hacked.” I guess he’s going to lay into the GOP this time.
NRCC leaders believe it was a foreign entity that attacked the committee after they quietly informed the FBI and found the nature of the attack mimic something that was from inside the U.S.
Breaking: Thousands of sensitive emails were stolen from the National Republican Congressional Committee in a major hack during the 2018 election https://t.co/X0CAw2ykuX
— POLITICO (@politico) December 4, 2018
The email accounts of four senior aides at the National Republican Congressional Committee were surveilled for several months, the party officials said. The intrusion was detected in April by an NRCC vendor, who alerted the committee and its cybersecurity contractor. An internal investigation was initiated and the FBI was alerted to the attack, said the officials, who requested anonymity to discuss the incident.
However, senior House Republicans — including Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) — were not informed of the hack until POLITICO contacted the NRCC on Monday with questions about the episode. Rank-and-file House Republicans were not told, either.
Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), who served as NRCC chairman this past election cycle, did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
Committee officials said they decided to withhold the information because they were intent on conducting their own investigation, and feared that revealing the hack would compromise efforts to find the culprit.
As of right now none of the information from those stolen emails has been released to the public nor has there been any extortion attempt by those who took the information. The leadership of the NRCC claims that they have not been contacted as of yet.
All this means is that someone is probably holding it for the 2020 election when they will release the contents of their hacking in an attempt to severely hurt Pres. Trump.
I for one would like to see what’s in the emails. Didn’t it seem that the House Republicans didn’t really put up a fight to stop the takeover of the Democrats or is that just me?
