It’s over for one of Fox’s favorite shows that ran into a snag after the Jussie Smollett incident that happened earlier this year.
According to Deadline, Empire is scheduled to shut down after the end of Season Six. Smollett has not returned to the show since the start of the last season, and it seems there are no plans for him to return.
Charlie Collier, CEO Fox Entertainment held a conference call where he said: “We are turning the final season into a large TV event, we are trying to go out guns a blazing. You allow fans to lean in and have the ending they deserve.”
Collier was asked whether or not the embattled Smollet would return to the show which prompted this response: “we have no plans for that.”
On the other hand, amidst other long in the tooth issues, Empire was pummeled this year by new ratings lows and the every spiraling controversy over the January 29 presumed hate crime that the Jamal Lyon portraying Smollett is now alleged by Chicago Police and prosecutors to have perpetrated against himself.
Things were still looking good several weeks ago for a longer run when options for key cast like the once and now once again music moguls the Lyon clan of matriarch Cookie (Henson) patriarch Lucious , (Howard), on-screen sons Bryshere Y. Gray, and Trai Byers, along with Gabourey Sidibe and Nicole Ari Parker were sewed up last month for another season, I hear.
Having portrayed openly gay middle son Jamal Lyon on the series from its early 2015 debut, Fox Entertainment and now Disney-owned 20th Century Fox TV “negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for Season 6.” [Deadline]
Smollet, who played Jamal Lyons on the show made national headlines in a wrong way when he reported that white men attacked him in masked that beat him up while on his way home from a Subway early in the morning.
He was later indicted allegedly staging the attack and charged with 16 felonies to which he pled not guilty. In a move that stunned many, the charges were dropped out of the blue. The city of Chicago is still investigating the acts of the State Attorney and has sued Smollett over the cost of the police investigation.

there was no legal uncertainty involved here. The evidence was overwhelming AND disclosed to the Public. He bought the materials himself and has the receipt. He hired his friends and paid them with a check.
He delayed the attack because his flight was delayed. He orchestrated the entire event to create a race riot and blame Trump. This guy’s stupidity approaches Alexandria Occasional Cortex’s. He wrote a check to pay off his alleged attackers for God’s sake.
Appreciate what you have. Lord knows there are millions to potentially billions of people that would trade places with you in a heartbeat. This idiot went from making over a million dollars a year to destroying his show and his career.
Good on viewers for tuning this show out and forcing Fox’s hands. No violent rallies, no Antifa, no threatening 13-year-olds and seeking to dox them. No racist smears, just people holding this idiot accountable the right way.
