Child Tells Parents Of Suicidal Thoughts So What Does Dad Do? Gave Him A Shotgun!

A Maryland father, Anthony Lewis, 46, allegedly gave his teenage son a shotgun and told him to shoot himself using the words “Just do it.”

According to ABC station WMAR in Baltimore, Lewis was hit with multiple charges when authorities learned he had physically abused his teenage son, who had been having suicidal thoughts.

WMAR said, according to court documents obtained, Lewis put the shotgun in the hands of his 14-year-old son earlier this year. He also, on least three instances, beat his son with a belt 20 times, each coupled along with an accusation of strangulation.

“I saw weird colors in my eyes and it started turning black,” he said of the incident, the station cited the court documents. The alleged incidents happened between Jan. 19 and June 30, according to court documents obtained by ABC News. It was not clear on which date the alleged shotgun incident occurred.

The victim — who told authorities his father allegedly forced the shotgun into his hands after he admitted to thinking about suicide — was not named by authorities. The child was not injured or wounded in the alleged shotgun incident.

A warrant for Lewis’ arrest was issued on Nov. 20. He’s been charged with three felonies and four misdemeanors, including; first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, child abuse in the 2nd degree, assisted suicide by providing means, firearm use and failure to send a child to school.

Lewis is being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center, according to jail records. [ABC News]

In the case of the shotgun, maybe the Dad was using some reverse psychology and calling the kids bluff? The beating with a belt and strangling is child abuse and should be handled by the courts.

We don’t know what this kid was a problem child, and we only hear half the story, but no should have to deal with being ‘strangled.’

First of all, it’s not hard to see why this 14-year-old felt suicide was an option based on his home life. And we know that many teens who aren’t abused feel that way too. Far too many succeed in their attempts. It’s also true that many parents aren’t up to the job of raising kids, but this goes beyond a lack of parenting skills.

The good here is that now the boy can get out of his situation and that the father will lose access to firearms. He has no business with a gun.
