Facebook, Instagram Identify 115 Accounts Linked To Foreign Entities - Two Days Before Election

According to an internal report, Facebook caught wind of this breach on Sunday night when they were notified by US law enforcement about “online activity that they recently discovered and which they believe may be linked to foreign entities.” Nathaniel Gleicher, the company’s Head of Cybersecurity Policy released the announcement.

Gleicher said Facebook decided to make this announcement to platform users days before the election as the investigation is still ongoing. They do not know whether or not the accounts are linked to an Internet Research Agency, i.e., the Russian troll farm which allegedly caused issues during the 2016 election. Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have been removing accounts, and pages like it were the Spanish Inquisition. This latest move happens ten days from Facebook removing 82 pages, groups based out of Iran which promoted political propaganda through meme form. Their reach started with a minimum of one million users in the U.S. and U.K.

In a statement late Monday, Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, said the company has so far identified 115 accounts on Facebook and Instagram that “may be linked to foreign entities.”

They include 30 Facebook accounts, mostly in Russian and French, and 85 more mostly-in-English Instagram accounts.

Typically, we would be further along with our analysis before announcing anything publicly,” Gleicher said. “But given that we are only one day away from important elections in the U.S., we wanted to let people know about the action we’ve taken and the facts as we know them today.

“We see this as probably the biggest companywide reorientation since our shift from desktops to mobile phones,” said Samidh Chakrabarti, who leads Facebook’s elections and civic engagement team, adding that the company “has mobilized to make this happen.”

Great timing Zuckerberg. How do you say it? The horses are out of the barn; the train has left the station, it’s all over but the shouting? The time to figure this out is six months before the election, not six hours. Whatever damage they were going to do is done. This is the second election they’ve done this. You don’t have control over what you’re running, do you?

This is one of the most interesting debates now.  Just what the heck is “inauthentic coordinated behavior?”  I might be really against it if I knew what the definition was.

As far as “propaganda” goes, your BFF that posts those cool vacation pictures is engaged in it, in a different form, but it’s propaganda nonetheless.  Most social media traffic is propaganda.

Some strongly feel Facebook is perfect for this kind of manipulation. From my own experience, it’s more of a place for older Americans, baby boomers and for some reason they are vulnerable to traps of this sort. Related: Twitter, Facebook Unpopular With Teens Across America - There’s A New Go To!

A Facebook spokesman declined to give any more information about the current investigation including who and what government agency informed them of the breach.
