Ellen DeGeneres Mother Speaks Out About Not Believing Daughter’s Story of Sexual Abuse Years Ago!

Daytime talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was candid and forthcoming in an interview with David Letterman about how her stepfather sexually abused her when she was 15 years old.

Ellen told Letterman that she had told her mom a few years later about the abuse, but she wasn’t believed. Her mother took the side of her stepfather and stayed with him for another 18 years. Ellen was affected by that betrayal, and it led to where she is today.

I know this might come at the wrong time to say this but I have heard many stories from LGBTQ community, and it seems the one constant in each story is they were somehow sexually assaulted over and over again when they were young kids. Although it might not have happened to 100 percent of the community, it’s a very large portion, and when they might have alerted someone, they were not believed.

Betty DeGeneres, Ellen’s mother, spoke out for the first time publicly and how this situation that lasted for years affected her relationship with her daughter.

Betty DeGeneres: “I know now that one of the hardest things to do is speak up after being sexually abused. I love my daughter, and I wish I had the capacity to listen to her when she told me what happened. I live with that regret, and I wouldn’t want that for any other parent. If someone in your life has the courage to speak out, please believe them.”
