DUPREE: A Black Man Can Thrive in America If He Chooses

It is my strong belief that many people in the African-American community expected major changes when Obama took office.

We seem to believe as a country that the quality of our lives is dependent on the people in high office and some people naively thought he could better their personal lives. Instead of promoting the idea that it’s the system that’s keeping black young men down or has the power to lift them up, we need to encourage these young men to take personal responsibility for their lives.

Even if there’s still a handful of racist people in the country, a black man can thrive today if he chooses. The black community as a whole can fix their own problems right now by:

1) Having children within marriage;
2) Parenting those children and encouraging education and;
3) Not treating criminal behavior as normal and acceptable.

If they do these things, many young black men’s lives will be spared and they will thrive. Making criminals into heroes and demonizing people attempting to serve and protect will only lead to more death and destruction.
