Colbert and Other Late-Night Hosts Rip Trump’s SOTU: ‘Like Watching Paint Lie’

By Zachary Leeman | February 6, 2019

Late-night host Stephen Colbert — surprise! — was no fan of President Donald Trump’s Tuesday night State of the Union address from Capitol Hill.

One of the comedian’s biggest complaints was that the president’s speech — which lasted roughly 80 minutes — was too long.

“This was not a particularly good speech, but what it lacked in quality it made up for in length. This speech was like watching paint lie,” Colbert joked on “The Late Show” on Tuesday night.

Colbert’s takedown of Trump’s address was part of what he dubbed, “The Restate of the Union.”

Colbert later showed a clip of Trump saying during his address, “An economic miracle is taking place in the United States and the only thing that could stop it are foolish wars, politics, or ridiculous partisan investigations.”

Colbert responded in his mocking Trump voice, “You heard me, you get the truth or a functioning economy. Keep in mind, I turned this sucker off for a month over a wall. You think I won’t burn this place to the ground to stay out of jail?”

Other late-night hosts similarly went after Trump’s speech for its length.

“Between the Super Bowl and the State of the Union, that’s six hours of our lives we’ll never get back,” “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon joked.

Jimmy Kimmel added on his show, “He spoke for so long, [special counsel] Robert Mueller handed down five more indictments.”
