BIPARTISAN! ‘Dem David Scott blisters Shinseki and Obama on House Floor

Congressman David Scott, who supports a bill to make it easier to fire VA officials, said Secretary Eric Shinseki should be the first to go. He said that VA officials he spoke to “told a damn lie” when they said there were no veteran suicides other than the reported ones, because the truth came out just a day later.

But Scott also had some harsh words for the president, expressing his profound disappointment with the Commander-in-Chief:

“I listened to the president today. And I was very disappointed with President Obama today. There was no urgency. Mr. President, we need urgency! We need you to roll up your sleeves and get into these hospitals!”

There is no urgency, well other than Obama saying he’s “madder than hell.” SO MAD, in fact, that he will fire absolutely no one.

  1. Veterans Affairs officials warned the Obama-Biden transition team in the weeks after the 2008 presidential election that the department shouldn’t trust the wait times that its facilities were reporting.
  2. “This is not only a data integrity issue in which [Veterans Health Administration] reports unreliable performance data; it affects quality of care by delaying — and potentially denying — deserving veterans timely care,” the officials wrote…
  3. In particular, the 2008 transition report referred to a VA inspector general recommendation to test the accuracy of reported waiting times…
  4. “Audits of outpatient scheduling and patient waiting times completed since 2005 have identified noncompliance with the policies and procedures for scheduling, inaccurate reporting of patient waiting times and errors in [electronic waiting lists],” the briefing papers state…
  5. The briefing materials do not reveal any concerns about outright fraud in manipulating waiting times, but they make repeated references in summarizing past audits and reviews about data accuracy.
  6. Any death of a Veteran since Obama was in office is on his head….no one else. When GM was recently found to have been negligent in delaying a recall causing the death of consumers…they called the CEO to testify…not one mid level engineer.
