BEHNA: U.S. Airstrike Kills Ex-Gitmo Detainee Released In 2009 By Obama

On Monday, the Pentagon confirmed a U.S. airstrike against Al Qaeda on March 2 killed a former Guantanamo Bay detainee in Yemen who was released by Barack Obama in 2009.

Reuters reported the statement from Pentagon spokesman Navy Captain Jeff Davis.

“We can confirm the death of a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, Yasir al Silmi,” said Navy Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, adding al Silmi had been held at the detention center from 2002 to 2009.

In a statement, the Pentagon added that he was also known as Mohammed Tahar and was repatriated from Guantanamo Bay in 2009 to Yemen.

Davis said two other Al Qaeda terrorists were also taken out from airstrikes between March 2 and March 3.

Usayd al Adani, whom Davis described as a longtime al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula explosives expert and facilitator who served as the organization’s emir, was killed in a U.S. airstrike March 2 within the Abyan Governorate.

Killed March 3 was al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula fighter and communications intermediary for Adani, Harithah al Waqri, Davis said.

He also said the U.S. would continue to work with the Yemen government against Al Qaeda.

Contrary to Obama, Trump has no plans to ever close Guantanamo Bay.

There should be no further releases from Gitmo. These are extremely dangerous people and should not be allowed back onto the battlefield.

And Trump said this in 2014.

Many of the released Guantanamo detainees are now fighting for ISIS and other enemy groups. We need proper leadership before it is too late!
