BEHNA: Prominent Catholic Priest Implies Christians Should Support Transgender Bathroom Policy

On Wednesday, a prominent Catholic priest implied that Christians should support the transgender bathroom policy.

It was in response to President Donald Trump scaling back Barack Obama’s federal regulations.

James Martin, a Jesuit priest, went on a Twitter storm which implied Christians should support the policy to his 104,000 followers.

He started out by saying it does not hurt anybody.

students endure so many indignities already. They should be able to use whatever bathrooms they choose. It doesn’t hurt anybody.

He believed they could no longer go to the bathroom of their choice. However, Trump said this was a state issue.

Besides this should not be a federal issue anyway.

It saddens me that a student cannot choose what bathrooms to use. A basic need. It’s an affront to their dignity as human beings.

Evidently, progressives do not support the 10th Amendment. They think the federal government should always be involved.

Martin then claimed it is harmless because he had seen women use the men’s bathroom.

And who is harmed by a student using a bathroom? I’ve seen women using men’s rooms when the ladies’ rooms were full. Who is harmed?

He is not aware of individual cases in which girls had been victims of older men. Plus most parents would be uncomfortable if their child had to share the bathroom with them.

He then invokes Jesus.

But for Jesus, there is no “other.” There is no “them.” There is only “us.” So we must be about openness, acceptance and inclusion.

Who should stand with the marginalized, the mocked, the bullied, the confused, the outcast, the minority? The Christian should.

Sadly, it does not surprise me too much that Martin supports this policy. He is an advocate of “New Ways Ministry,” a pro-LGBT group that proclaims to be Catholic.

Even the head of the U.S. Catholic Bishops in 2010 condemned the organization.

Organization cannot legitimately speak for Catholics.
Not approved by Archdiocese of Washington since 1984.
Groups can’t claim to give Catholic teaching if denying central aspects of the faith.

So he implied Christians should show support for the transgender bathroom policies when he included Jesus and Christianity in his last two tweets.

He has every right to his opinion, but I completely disagree with him. There are many good Christians who also oppose this horrible policy.
