Baltimore’s crime numbers have spiked the first couple weeks of 2018, and with these results, Mayor Catherine Pugh has decided to go in another direction.
Police Commissioner Kevin Davis as fired on Friday because the crime rating is shooting through the roof and new Mayor Pugh is feeling the rigors of being held accountable. Davis’ replacement, Darryl DeSousa, is a 30-year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department and he wants more police on the street.
Mayor Pugh has said she is impatient so if Davis can’t turn it around quickly, he might be looking for a new job soon also. The commissioner doesn’t make the plan to fight crime, he or she just tries to get the results the mayor wants. It’s the city’s plan that is a failure, and it has failed a long time.
DeSousa promised to put more uniformed officers on the streets, starting Friday morning. He said waves of officers would deploy hourly in areas most plagued by violence. He is decentralizing some units of the Police Department to more resources in the nine districts.
“The No. 1 thing you will see is more police officers on the streets in the community in uniform. They are going to have specific missions each and every day,” DeSousa said. “They are going to do pro-active, constitutional policing. They are going to enforce the laws of Baltimore City. They are going to be very visible. They are going to have positive engagement with the entire community. They’ve been placed in strategic corridors of the city. We took a look at the top for districts in the city that led the violence last year. They’re deployed there. There’s going to be officers on foot addressing problematic businesses.”
His message for criminals: “I have a real strong message for the trigger pullers — it’s that we’re coming after them,” DeSousa said.
Just passing the buck, so the pressure is off her for a while. What a joke. Baltimore City is a disaster zone. Only places worse is the Chicago battlefield. We can’t forget the city with the strongest gun laws in America, how dare the criminals? They won’t listen to the gun laws that are passed.
Sorry to say, nothings going to change unless she realizes it’s the community that will stop the crime, not this guy or the next guy as the commissioner.
