Memphis police went to a home in Frayser to locate a “fugitive” and serve a warrant for his arrest. Things went awry as the suspect, Brandon Webber, tried to run.
Reports are that Webber not only tried to ram police cars when he left the vehicle, but he also pulled a gun which ended with law enforcement firing on the suspect. After that, the neighborhood responded with violence against the police. Twenty-five police officers were injured in the aftermath of the Webber confrontation.
If the suspect pulled a gun, what is law enforcement supposed to do, wait till he shoots two or three officers and then it is ok to fire back? I don’t know if Webber had a gun or not, but neither do the apologists on social media. You can’t lay blame on anyone until the full truth comes out.
So let me get this straight: federal marshals were serving a federal felony warrant at the right house, the man for whom they were looking attempted to flee the scene, HE rammed multiple police vehicles and then got out of his vehicle with a weapon at which time police engaged him, leading to his death and the community is protesting without straight facts?
Armed officers and an angry crowd faced off after a black man was fatally shot in a confrontation with U.S. marshals in a working-class Memphis neighborhood.
People in the crowd threw rocks and bricks, with 25 officers suffering mostly minor injuries during the tense clash Wednesday night in the Frayser community in north Memphis. Officers cordoned off several blocks near the scene. By 11 p.m., officers had used tear gas and most of the crowd dispersed, police director Michael Rallings said at a Thursday morning at a news conference. Three people were arrested.
Officers on horseback patrolled the area, and lines of police cars with flashing blue lights were parked along the street. An ambulance could be seen at the outer edge of the scene. A helicopter flew overhead as police cars trickled away. Residential streets were blocked, and a heavy police presence remained in the area Thursday.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Keli McAlister said the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force went to a Frayser home to look for a suspect with felony warrants. Marshals saw the man get into a vehicle and then proceed to ram task force vehicles several times before exiting with a weapon, McAlister said. Marshals then opened fire, killing the man who died at the scene. McAlister did not say how many marshals fired or how many times the man was shot. [Associated Press]
Mayoral Candidate and Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer said “Every life lost should matter…every single one. How many times will this be ok? It cannot continue to be.” Sawyer’s statements contributed to the riots. In her position, she should have made calming comments instead of incendiary comments that endangered police and the citizens.
At some point, you have to take the ball and go home. I have no idea why anyone would be a cop. In Baltimore, after the Freddie Gray fiasco, the police withdrew and did zero proactive policing. That means they sat in their cars and waited to get calls from dispatch like cab drivers, and that means the murder rate skyrocketed because the crime was left to fester. The criminals knew they had the space to destroy. Not long after, preachers were holding marches demanding the police return to their neighborhoods and save them. I say, protect yourself.
How come there’s not this type of community outrage when it’s one of their citizens shooting another citizen, which happens quite a lot? All there is grief and sadness and a funeral, but when police are doing their jobs, if this story is accurate, and they riot and attack the police, that’s NOT going to help their cause or standing with the police!
Americans do not support a war on their Police. Americans support law enforcement, and giving voice to the marginalized few who wish to wage war on law enforcement was one of the greatest blunders of the former President. I doubt Americans will vote for or tolerate any Presidential candidate who wishes to return to such policies, or perpetuate a war on law enforcement.
