The professional tennis player Jeremy Chardy, who is from France and is ranked number 73 globally, has announced that he has no choice but to end his season early due to side effects from getting the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Since I got my vaccine, I have a problem. I have a lot of problems. As a result, I can’t train, I can’t play,” Chardy said, according to Tennis Majors. “I don’t know what to do. The problem is that we have no hindsight on the vaccine. There are people who had similar [side-effects], but the durations [of the issues] were really different.”

Chardy went on to say that he can’t yet say when he’ll be returning to competition.

“In my head, it’s difficult because I don’t know how long it will last,” he said. “For now, my season is stopped, and I don’t know when I’ll start again.”

“It’s frustrating because I started the year really well. I was playing really well. And then I went to the Games, where I felt great too,” Chardy continued, according to Reuters. “And now my season is at a standstill, and I do not know when I will resume. It is especially frustrating that I do not have ten years to play… suddenly, now I regret having had the vaccine, but I could not know [what the consequences would be].”

Chardy feels so badly physically that he isn’t even ruling out retirement at this point.

“I turn 35 in February, so for the moment, I’m maybe a little bit negative, but this is the first time the idea that next season might be my last has crossed my mind,” he explained. “I’m thinking about it… It’s difficult because I was enjoying myself, and I wanted to play longer.”

This comes after former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash said that the COVID-19 vaccine is experimental and that players should not be forced to get them.

“I’m not having a politician or a TV doctor who’s on [their] payroll tell me what I should and shouldn’t be doing with my health, okay?” Cash said last month, according to Tennis World USA. “Do I need to get vaccinated? I don’t know. I’ll make that decision at a later stage. But right now, no, I don’t need to. I’m fit. I just don’t want young, healthy athletes taking something that could long-term damage them for no reason.

“We just don’t know,” he continued. “Can’t we just wait a year or two years until all the info is out there? And make a decision then. “That was my stance. Let’s just wait and see what happens.”

This all serves as further proof that we really have no idea how these COVID-19 vaccines will affect anyone down the road. That’s exactly why individuals should have the freedom to make their own decisions about whether or not to get vaccinated without the government getting involved.
