I could have told you months ago that this would happen to the ratings at the Olympics.
It wasn’t exactly hard to predict.
The “activist athletes” had already destroyed the NFL, NBA, and even started in on the MLB, so it was only natural that they’d do the same to the Olympics.
And that’s precisely what’s happened.
Axios reported that ratings for the Olympic Games opening ceremony were down 36% compared to 2016, according to preliminary numbers from NBC Universal.
The figures for the Tokyo Games event mark the lowest audience for an Olympics opening ceremony event in over three decades, per Reuters.
Roughly $1 billion has been spent on advertising around the Olympics. Ratings are the only real metric marketers can use to justify much of that spend.
By the numbers: About 17 million people watched the event on broadcast and streaming, according to NBC. Early broadcast numbers suggest some 10 million people watched the event on linear TV.
By comparison, about 26.5 million people and 27.8 million people tuned in to the Olympic opening events in Rio in 2016 and Pyeongchang in 2018, respectively.
But here’s where things get really silly. The liberals over at Axios go on to blame the “no-crowds” at the Olympics for the ratings dive.
Are these people serious?
Here’s what liberal Axios said about the massive decline in ratings:
Yes, but: Some of this is out of NBC’s hands. Without fans in the stands, the content may not be as compelling to viewers this year as it has been in the past.
Some reviews of the opening ceremony pegged it as downbeat compared to previous ceremonies, others described it as boring.
That’s cute. Kind of like how the NFL and NBA blame “COVID” for their ratings nose-dive, not the scores of fans screaming at them to stop the “woke” crap, and booing all the athletes who “take a knee.”
No, it couldn’t be those people tuning out in droves, could it?
Look, these people know exactly why the ratings are diving – they just won’t admit it. They keep shoving their woke agenda down your gullet because they figure soon enough, you’ll just accept it and comply.
That’s the “communist way.”
However, that’s not the American way.
Daily Wire reported that more than 60% of Americans were unable to express excitement or interest in the summer games, and at least 45% of Americans confirmed they are NOT looking forward to the games in any capacity.” Excitement was even lower among Republicans.
And this coincides with a new ABC poll that shows a vast majority of Americans are unhappy with where America is heading. Breitbart reported that months into Joe Bidens’ presidency, Americans’ optimism regarding the direction of the country has dropped nearly 20 points, a recent ABC News/Ipsos poll found.
ABC News reported on Sunday:
A majority — 55% — of the public say they are pessimistic about the direction of the country, a marked change from the roughly one-third (36%) that said the same in an ABC News/Ipsos poll published May 2. In the early May survey, Americans were more optimistic than pessimistic by a 28-percentage point margin. Optimism is now under water by 10 points. Looking ahead to the next 12 months, fewer than half — 45% — now report feeling optimistic about the way things are going, a significant drop from about two-thirds (64%) in the May poll.
The decrease in optimism has occurred among Democrats, Republicans, and independents.
So, let’s put this all together:
Americans don’t approve of “woke/activist athletes,” they are angry over dangerous liberal ploices like “defund the police,” they don’t like the “anti-America” messaging from the left, and they’re depressed over the direction the country is heading in…
But liberals want you to think the reason the Olympics are low-rated is that there are no “crowds.”
I am not denying that the Olympics probably “feels” a lot different without big crowds. I get that. But it’s a small and understandable hurdle to overcome.
What’s not a small or understandable hurdle to overcome are spoiled, narcissistic athletes who disrespect their county and all Americans on the world stage for a few lousy PR points.
I have never missed the Olympic games until this year. Ever since I was a little girl, I loved watching the Olympics. But I have no desire to watch a bunch of ungrateful, low-info “political” athletes.
I’d rather sit in an empty room and stare at the walls…and I know I am not alone in this thinking.
