Days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave their explosive tell-all interview about the royal family to Oprah Winfrey, a friend of Prince Charles is speaking out to say that the 72-year-old heir to the throne is “at a loss” about what his son and daughter-in-law have done.

A friend of Charles’ told Vanity Fair correspondent Katie Nicholl that the royal could not bring himself to watch the interview, which has been seen by almost fifty million people from all around the world.

“He will not be drawn into it, but it’s fair to say he is surprised and very disappointed by what has been said,” the longtime friend said on Thursday. “He didn’t watch the interview, but of course he’s heard what has been said. He feels let down by them both.”

Charles is reportedly aware of the shocking claims made by Harry and Meghan, including one that an unnamed senior member of the royal family was concerned about “how dark” their son Archie would be before he was born. Harry refused to name which royal had these concerns, only saying that it was neither Queen Elizabeth nor Prince Philip.

“There is not a racist bone in his body and to suggest otherwise is very hurtful,” the friend insisted to Nicholl.

Fox News reported that Nicholl had said the day after the interview aired that Charles was “in a state of despair.”

“As Vanity Fair reported on Sunday, Harry was emailing his father to justify why he and Meghan had done the interview,” Nicholl said on Monday. “Charles was said to be ‘in a state of despair’ according to a friend.”:

Charles has yet to comment publicly on the interview, but Buckingham Palace responded to it in a brief statement released on Tuesday night.

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan,” the statement read. “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.  While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.”

“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved family members,” it added.
