Days after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sat down with Oprah Winfrey for a tell-all interview about the British royal family, a royal expert is speaking out to say that Queen Elizabeth is “privately devastated” by what they did.

During the interview, Meghan claimed that she was faced with racism from within the royal family and that she felt so isolated as a royal that she became suicidal at one point in her pregnancy with her son Archie.

“The queen, who has never given a formal media interview, is said to be privately devastated by the shocking revelations and the potential damage to the reputation of the Royal Family,” royal author Katie Nicholl wrote for Vanity Fair. “She is also deeply concerned for Prince Philip, who remains in the hospital recovering from a heart procedure.”

Nicholl added that Buckingham Palace released a statement on Tuesday night after around 48 hours of meetings, crisis talks, and private family conversations.

“Sources say the statement is designed to try and put out the flames following the couple’s dynamite interview,” the expert claimed.

Fox News reported that the statement read:

“The whole family is saddened to learn the full extent of how challenging the last few years have been for Harry and Meghan. The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning.  While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately. Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much loved family members.”

Though it is not known if the Queen, 94, watched the interview, it’s been confirmed that she was briefed about it by palace aides over breakfast on Monday morning.

“It is understood the queen immediately called a meeting with Charles and William to discuss what to do,” Nicholl wrote.

Nicholl had previously said that Harry’s father Prince Charles was “in a state of despair” over the interview.

“As Vanity Fair reported on Sunday, Harry was emailing his father to justify why he and Meghan had done the interview,” Nicholl said on Monday. “Charles was said to be ‘in a state of despair’ according to a friend.”

As for Harry’s brother Prince William, Nicholl wrote that he is “devastated” by the interview.

“William is devastated by this interview,” said royal expert Katie Nicholl. “Don’t forget that the Duchess of Cambridge is being dragged into this whole saga and William will hate that and of course, relationship between father and son is of course at an all-time low.”

“I think that the idea that Kate’s being dragged into this will be upsetting for Kate who behind the scenes has tried really hard to be a peacemaker between William and Harry,” the expert continued. “She has been deeply saddened by the brothers’ falling out. Don’t forget she was incredibly close to Harry herself.”
