I think the idea of a senator leaving his state during an emergency was ill-considered, but I was 100% behind Sen. Ted Cruz when he came out with his story initially. The way politics is today, both sides will attack or defend Cruz for their own political purposes, but neither side is thinking about the Texas voters.

That’s the shame of the entire situation. Those on the right will try to protect Ted even though he came clean on his story, and the left will try to crucify him because that’s who they are politically, but the common denominator is Ted screwed up he will have to live with it.

During an interview on Sean Hannity’s Fox News Thursday evening show, Cruz told the conservative host, “Heidi and me, we lost power for two days. Our house was dark. We had no heat. We were all huddled around the fireplace because it was the only heat in the house, and after a couple of days [of] the girls being really cold and [temperatures] being in the teens or the 20s outside, our girls said, ‘Look, school has been canceled for the week. Can we take a trip and go somewhere warm?’ And Heidi and I, as parents, said, ‘OK, sure.’ And so last night I flew down with them to the beach, and then I flew back this afternoon.”

But that’s where the story changed, and Cruz flipped the script. Cruz told Hannity he had intended to stay with his family through the weekend, which contradicts what he initially told the media earlier. Cruz said, “but as I was heading down there, you know, I started to have second thoughts almost immediately because of the crisis here in Texas, you need to be here on the ground.”

Cruz admits the trip was obviously a mistake, and let me say personally, I don’t care if Cruz takes a luxury vacation while millions of others are without power and water, that’s between him and his conscience, but you don’t have to lie about it. Tell the truth from the beginning.

Yes, Cruz could have sent the family and stayed home himself. On the other hand, there was actually very little he could have done about what was going on, and most of the folks in Texas are going to see that. The majority of those calling for him to step down are democrats flailing around trying to get a shot at another senate seat and waiting for the government to solve all their problems.

It is clear that taking the trip does not look good for him politically and shows a lack of judgment and compassion. Cruz is supposed to be representing Texas but leaves the country. As already mentioned, personally, I don’t care, but the millions without power and water probably do care.

My original position on the #CancunGate was that there’s not much that Cruz could have done by staying (it’s a state issue, not a federal one), but it is terrible judgment and also shows bad leadership. But wow, Ted, you made things so much worse by blatantly lying about so many things (it was only going to be for one day, it was his kids that wanted to join their friends, etc.). He’s just not a great politician, and this will definitely not help.

I don’t care right now how much Democrats lie, which is the ignorant point people will make to defend Ted but one thing Americans do not support, and that’s a liar. You can cheat on your spouse, cheat on your taxes, get caught laundering and put the money back, all types of bad deeds as a politician, and you will survive to a point with an apology. Americans don’t forgive liars, never have.

Hannity tried to cover for him during the show before Cruz cleared up the story. This is one reason why I don’t like politicians. I am not even on board with Majorie Taylor Greenee as she caved to the left by walking back her convictions over a political seat assignment.

Too many cowards in Congress today, and America needs better representation. They are not serving us well at all. Apology here, apology here. They shouldn’t be praised; they should be ridiculed and removed and replaced by individuals that take the job seriously.
