The supermodel Tyra Banks broke down in tears as she hosted last night’s episode of “Dancing With The Stars” while honoring Jeannie May, who had to drop out of the competition due to a medical emergency. This came weeks after Banks replaced Tom Bergeron as host of the ABC reality television following his controversial firing over the summer.
“Jeannie, we’re glad everything went well and that you’re on your way to a speedy recovery,” Banks said as her voice broke. “As you see, I’m emotional. We’re all emotional in here.”
After remembering May’s “love and passion” for “Dancing With The Stars,” Banks added, “Just know you are still a part of this family until the final episode of this season.”
May, who is a co-host on “The Real,” was forced to leave the show to undergo emergency surgery for epiglottis, a rare condition that can impede breathing and become fatal if not treated, according to Daily Mail.
“I am absolutely devastated that my journey on ‘Dancing With The Stars’ has to end this way,” May said from her hospital room on last night’s show.
This season of “Dancing With The Stars” has been wrought with controversy, with fans frequently calling for Bergeron to be brought back to replace Banks, who many feel has made too many mistakes as a host. Last month, Banks botched an elimination on “Dancing With The Stars,” declaring a couple safe that was actually in the bottom two. This prompted fans to once again call for Banks to be fired and for the return of Bergeron, who had hosted the show since it premiered in 2005 before his firing.
“Bring them back!!!!” one fan tweeted. “Tom wouldn’t have screwed up!!!!!!#DWTS you guys ruin a good things by letting go the real hosts they had chemistry. Tyra just pulled a Steve Harvey.”
“Maybe if Tyra didn’t talk so much she wouldn’t have to RUSH the elimination #DWTS,” another fan added, with a third writing, “DWTS. Please bring back Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews. Tyra Banks sucks, no personality, all about her wardrobe! Downhill this season.”
Banks fired back by saying that she does not pay attention to negative criticisms.
“I know it exists, but what good does that do, participating in that?” Banks told USA Today, referring to the backlash against her. “I don’t think there’s anything really positive from that.”
