5G seems to be causing a bit of a scare, and it has even found its way into some bizarre conspiracy theories. Some are saying that the coronavirus is caused by 5G because Wuhan had begun using it prior to their outbreak in December. There have been other claims saying that the new cellular network causes health issues in general, and these claims have been amplified by social media.
Unfortunately, based on report from NBC News there have been some recent incidents in the UK revolving around the 5G conspiracy theories. There have been several towers, and workers who install the towers have been harassed as well. This has caused further concern about how information is spreading about the virus and the people that it’s affecting.
“Britain’s culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, will meet with social media companies this week to discuss the spread of disinformation about 5G and COVID-19, a government spokesperson told CNBC.
“We have received several reports of criminal damage to phone masts and abuse of telecoms engineers apparently inspired by crackpot conspiracy theories circulating online. Those responsible for criminal acts will face the full force of the law,” the spokesperson said.
“We must also see social media companies acting responsibly and taking much swifter action to stop nonsense spreading on their platforms which encourages such acts. The Culture Secretary is meeting with companies this week to discuss this.” [NBC News]

Even some celebrities have spoken out and supported the claims causing a more rapid spread of information that hasn’t officially been confirmed. As of now, there is no evidence of any adverse effects that would be caused by the new 5G cellular towers. Some have pointed out how other regions like Iran, have gone without any of the upgraded network hardware and have still experienced coronavirus outbreaks of their own.
From a particular perspective, it is easy to see new information and link it to a problem in order to make sense out of things. But in order to get through this tough time smoothly, we are going to need to make sure all of our decisions are carried out with clarity. Misinformation is going to be common especially now because there are people who know they can take advantage of those who are irritated from being stuck inside for an extended period of time.
