House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) may have announced late on Tuesday the formalization of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump — claiming “the president must be held accountable” for his “betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security, and the betrayal of the integrity of our elections” — but she effectively endorsed a process that’s already been underway on Capitol Hill.
Her move might help Democratic legal arguments that impeachment proceedings were already in progress — which might allow Congress to gain access to additional documents, as a Fox News piece pointed out.
But even before Trump stepped foot in the Oval Office, many Democrats unhappy with the results of the 2016 presidential election have been trying to find ways to “get” the president.
They thought special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation would do it, but the results didn’t give them the answers or the outcome they sought.
Tea Party Patriots Action Honorary Chairman Jenny Beth Martin, a co-founder of the Tea Party Patriots, reacted to the news on Tuesday about Pelosi’s “impeachment inquiry” to determine whether or not the House should impeach Trump.
In comments shared with LifeZette, Martin criticized Pelosi and other pro-impeachment Democrats.
“’Ready, fire, aim.’ That’s the Democrats’ strategy for dealing with President Trump,” said Martin bluntly. “They’re so determined to undo the results of the 2016 election that they will stoop to any level, bar no holds, and resort to whatever chicanery is necessary to achieve their goals.”
“In this case, regarding a phone call between President Trump and the new president of Ukraine, no one in Congress has yet read the whistleblower’s complaint, which, CNN has now reported, is not even based on first-hand knowledge,” Martin also said late on Tuesday. “Nor has anyone in Congress yet read the actual transcript of the call. In other words, there are no facts at all that point to a need for an impeachment inquiry.”
“But Speaker Pelosi won’t let little things like facts get in the way — when there’s political hay to be made, she’ll throw the punch, whatever the consequences.”
“Let’s face it, this is all political,” Martin also said. “This has nothing at all to do with national security. If it did, we would have expected to hear these screams from Democrats on Capitol Hill years ago, when then-Vice President Joe Biden was leveraging U.S. aid to Ukraine to engineer the ouster of a Ukrainian prosecutor who was investigating a company on whose board his son sat.”
“Oddly, I don’t recall hearing a peep from them at the time.”
“Democrats who push to impeach the president on the basis of no evidence at all will only have themselves to blame when next year’s election results come in,” she concluded.
Meantime, many people point out that while Pelosi had held off on definitive impeachment moves for quite some time — arguing for more facts and counseling careful deliberation — she now seems to have acquiesced to the most leftward-leaning elements of her party, including the progressive Democratic “squad” members.
Speaking to Fox News on Tuesday evening, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) addressed that point. He said, “If you want to know what Speaker Pelosi will do tomorrow, read Ocasio-Cortez’s tweets tonight.”
His comments include the fact that, just this past weekend, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) (shown above right) slammed her party’s caution and lack of movement on the impeachment front.
Things have changed since then, clearly.
Trump has said he’ll release the transcript of his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. That alone will not satisfy Democrats, however.
They want access to the full complaint by the so-called whistleblower — someone who apparently did not even hear the gist of the phone call directly.
This individual apparently was biased against the president — and this whistleblower may wind up coming before Congress to testify.
Trump tweeted the following on Wednesday morning, as all of this plays out:
Will the Democrats apologize after seeing what was said on the call with the Ukrainian President? They should, a perfect call – got them by surprise!

Here’s some additional information from Fox News this morning on the latest moves: “A senior administration official told Fox News late Tuesday that the White House is working as quickly as it can to release to Congress a whistleblower complaint, as long as it’s legally possible. The official told Fox News that the White House had nothing to hide, that there has been no wrongdoing.”
“The Wall Street Journal reported that the complaint must be declassified first, but will likely be in Congress’ hands by the end of the week.”
And “The New York Times reported that the White House had dropped its objection to the whistleblower speaking to Congress. That came after the GOP-controlled Senate passed a unanimous resolution seeking access to the whistleblower’s complaint.”
