Jeff Zucker, CNN President, made a suggestive joke about sleeping with one of his employees, Alisyn Camerota while accepting an award for excellence in journalism a few nights ago.

Zucker: “I was gonna say that I love waking up with you every morning, but I want to say that I love waking up to you every morning,”

Camerota, a host of CNN’s “New Day,” was being honored at the Mirror Awards for leadership, dismissed the sentiment as an “oldest joke in the book.”

She spoke to the Daily Beast about the statement. “It’s the oldest joke in the book made to morning show anchors, both men, and women. I hear it a couple of times a week from people in the grocery store. That isn’t harassment, in my opinion, and I didn’t find it tone deaf, either.”

That statement from Camerota would have been thinking to get rid of her quickly. Down the line, if she does not gets what she wants or if she feels that her job is threatened, she will come out and use this statement as some sexual harassment flag.

I have to say, I don’t think that is the joke I would make in this day and age, but he has money and power enough to get away with it!

When Camerota left FNC, she claimed the environment there was hostile to women and said male employees had sexually harassed her. Does it get any more sexual and hostile than her boss saying in front of millions of people “I love waking up with you every morning?”

Very often, when someone is accused of sexual harassment, he says, “Oh come on! It was just a joke.” And that’s the problem. The same man could make the same statement, and one woman will take it as a harmless joke and laugh, another will take it as mildly offensive, and scowl and a third will take it as sexual harassment and bring criminal charges and lawsuits.

Or perhaps more to the point, two different men could make the same statement to the same woman. When the rich, dominant, handsome man says it, she thinks it’s an adorable joke and laughs. When the poor, ugly man says it, it’s sexual harassment.
