President Donald Trump, tweeting on Monday morning, has joined others in criticizing Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) over her controversial recent remarks about the Holocaust.
“Democrat Rep. Tlaib is being slammed for her horrible and highly insensitive statement on the Holocaust,” the president tweeted.
“She obviously has tremendous hatred of Israel and the Jewish people,” he added.
“Can you imagine what would happen if I ever said what she said, and says?”
Tlaib, 42, is the first-ever Palestinian-American woman elected to Congress.

Other Republicans want leaders on the Democratic side to “take action” against the freshman Democrat for her remarks.
Tlaib mentioned the Holocaust during an appearance on the Yahoo News podcast “Skullduggery.”
“There’s always kind of a calming feeling, I tell folks, when I think of the Holocaust, and the tragedy of the Holocaust, and the fact that it was my ancestors — Palestinians — who lost their land and some lost their lives, their livelihood, their human dignity, their existence in many ways, have been wiped out, and some people’s passports,” Tlaib said on the most recent episode of the podcast, which was released on Friday.
“And, just all of it was in the name of trying to create a safe haven for Jews, post-the Holocaust, post-the tragedy and the horrific persecution of Jews across the world at that time. And, I love the fact that it was my ancestors that provided that, right, in many ways — but they did it in a way that took their human dignity away and it was forced on them,” she added.
As Fox News noted, “The state of Israel was formed three years after the end of the Holocaust, although historians have pointed out that modern migration to the region had started decades earlier. The area was named Palestine at the time, although it was under British control.”
Also on that podcast episode, Tlaib went after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump. She accused Netanyahu of oppression and called for Trump’s impeachment, as Israel National News pointed out. “We can smell it from far away that, no, you don’t want to look at my grandmother in the eye, Netanyahu, and say, ‘You are equal to me. You are as human as I am to you,’” Tlaib said of the recently re-elected prime minister.
But Tlaib’s reference to a “calming feeling” in relation to the Holocaust’s aftermath is what has most drawn ire and upset.
“More than six million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. There is nothing ‘calming’ about that fact.”
“There is no justification for the twisted and disgusting comments made by Rashida Tlaib just days after the annual Day of Holocaust Remembrance,” House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said in a statement. “More than six million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust. There is nothing ‘calming’ about that fact.”
Tlaib responded on social media to the backlash on Sunday night.
In a tweet, she said people were taking her words out of context.
“Policing my words, twisting & turning them to ignite vile attacks on me will not work,” she wrote.
“All of you who are trying to silence me will fail miserably. I will never allow you to take my words out of context to push your racist and hateful agenda. The truth will always win.”

For many people, the issue is that some lawmakers such as Tlaib utter controversial or highly problematic remarks, then claim others are misunderstanding them or misconstruing them — rather than apologizing, revising or completely rethinking their remarks.
Notably, just hours after she was sworn in as a newly elected Michigan representative, Tlaib demanded Trump’s impeachment — and her use of an expletive while doing so drew widespread condemnation.
“People love you and you win. And when your son looks at you and says, ‘Mama, look, you won. Bullies don’t win.’ And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t, because we’re gonna go in there and we’re gonna impeach the motherf***er,'” she told a crowd of supporters in early January.

No one should ever receive a 'calming feeling' when thinking about the Holocaust. Rep. Rashida Tlaib's comments are completely unacceptable and reveal a disturbing, warped view of history. https://t.co/vZrn0mAtTh

People who actually care about anti-semitism should be deeply worried about the extremely cynical game being played with it to constantly smear @RashidaTlaib, @IlhanMN & other Israel critics. Nothing cheapens or trivializes the issue more than this tactic https://t.co/boLOOGfH2c
