Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ran to Twitter to deliver her response to the Alabama Republican Gov. Kay Ivey signing into law the most restrictive reproductive legislation since 1973.
If you are not up on current events, that’s when the Supreme Court legalized abortion nationwide, please not, Congress didn’t pass a law, these were opinions.
Ocasio-Cortez tweeted the following: “Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies; they’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women. From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, U.S. religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology,”
Abortion bans aren’t just about controlling women’s bodies.
They’re about controlling women’s sexuality. Owning women.
From limiting birth control to banning comprehensive sex ed, US religious fundamentalists are working hard to outlaw sex that falls outside their theology.

“Ultimately, this is about women’s power. When women are in control of their sexuality, it threatens a core element underpinning right-wing ideology: patriarchy. It’s a brutal form of oppression to seize control of the one essential thing a person should command: their own body,” the freshman congresswoman continued.

Why does a brand new, very young and no experience representative get so much press? We don’t get the reactions of each of the other (more than 400) congressional members reaction each time some law is passed in each state. Why her “reaction?” The media needs to relegate her to equal time and importance of all the other legislators.
It’s not oppression; it is called balancing of rights. This is an issue for the Supreme Court, and it is a difficult one. In my view, Roe will not be overturned. But, there could be some limitations upheld as within constitutional boundaries. The challenge is setting that boundary. Late term procedure ban probably gets upheld. Narrow time windows as little as a few weeks, probably will not be supported, as such narrow limits render the abortion rights from Row effectively illusory.
Could AOC please represent her constituents? The people in Alabama have their representatives.
Each state is granted the right to set the laws within their borders. State laws are not national concerns. You are freely able to move or vote out representatives if they are not representing the population of the state
Want cannabis? To gamble? Abortion? No income tax? Ability to purchase guns? College subsidy? Alcohol bans? Congrats, there’s a state somewhere for you. Find the state that fits your lifestyle.
I don’t like using abortion as just another method of birth control, I never have, and I never will. That being said, these choices come with consequences. As it stands now if a woman wants to abort a baby, the father has no right to stop her. Conversely, if she chooses to keep the baby, the father also has no choice and must pay support ordered by the courts. If a woman wants the right to choose, then she should also bear sole responsibility for that choice, including any financial responsibilities.
It is not fair for a woman to choose to keep a baby over the father’s objections and then for her to demand child support. If the father wants to help, that is his choice, but when a woman makes her choice, then her decision should absolve the father of any legal responsibilities. That being said if the father chooses not to support the child then he also loses any parental rights over the child.
While it does take two to make a baby, it only takes one to abort it, and that person should have to bear the weight of that choice on their own. AOC would have a woman have the right to choose, and they would probably make it the responsibilities of the government pay for the procedure.
AOC will soon learn that the rest of the country is in no way the same as New York. Our federal government only survives because each of our 50 states has individual approaches to modern problems. Before we take AOC seriously in any respect, lets preface each statement with the number of US Citizens who voted for her.
The irony is the people that are trying to hold on to abortion like grim death(pun intended) are the same people that enact legislation to find a human a half million dollars for touching some nest eggs in the wilderness.
While this gets worked out in courts, enforcement will correctly be blocked by courts.
Alabama’s law goes a little too far for me. (I’d give a 6-week post-rape window to get an abortion). But Alabama is free to disagree with me and adopt the morally justifiable position that since life begins at conception, it cannot be intentionally killed.
